Though I am wearing an Indian Lengha Choli today, I wish to inform everyone that I celebrate Chinese New Year like Miss Ng See Yee. I am a Chinese of Taoist faith and Miss Ng is a Chinese of the Christian faith. Quite a few teachers asked me why I was attired in an Indian get-up instead of a Cheongsam or Qipao. Well, I want to inform everyone that the traditional Cheongsams that I have have slits up both sides of the thigh and also very, very short sleeves. I don't think that it would be suitable to wear to school unlike the Lengha Choli or the Punjabi Suit.
I have been teaching in this school since 1995 and this is the first time during assembly before the Chinese New Year celebrations that there was no initiative taken to mention that both Miss Ng and I are celebrating this festival which marks the dawn of a new year for us. To a Chinese getting wishes from friends, relatives, colleagues and students is very important as it symbolises the wishes from them for the new year. Hopefully, both of us will not be forgotten during assembly next year.
