The last batch of students for Sekolah Menengah Seri Manjung finished sitting for their last SPM paper this morning. The Form 5 students next year will be sitting the exam as students of Kolej Vokasional Seri Manjung.

RECORDING A MOMENT IN SMVSM HISTORY

This morning, Cikgu Daniel, Miss Cheah and Cikgu Kamariah got ready their cameras to snap photographs of our Form 5 students after they sat for the last of their SPM examinations papers. This will be a part of SMVSM history as this will be the last batch of students for the vocational school. Next year the school will become a vocational college.

MEETING TO SCHEDULE TIME TABLES FOR KV

In about 23 days, our school will be referred to as a college. The wheels of change is already in motion and that is why even during the holidays the teachers have to meet to fine tune the time table for the new college.

This morning, one of our students Yoga sat for the SPM Tamil Papers 1 and 2. He was the only candidate to sit for the paper and as a matter of fact, he is the first and will be the last student to sit for this paper in our school. So Yoga has sort of set a record by sitting for this paper.

WORKING DURING THE SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

Though it is the school holidays, Cikgu Nodiana, Cikgu Norma, Cikgu Azalilah and I still have work to do. This morning the four of us were at the Teacher Activity Centre in Pantai Remis for a meeting. It was the third day of meeting for the three Bahasa Melayu teachers. Their meeting ended today. As for me, the three day meeting began today and will end on Wednesday. Next year, when our school turns into a college we will not be having holidays like the schools. We will have to go back to college to work in November and December as well.

MEETING UP WITH CIKGU AZALILAH

When I went for a meeting at PKG Pantai Remis this morning, I met up with Cikgu Azalilah who was attending a meeting there with Cikgu Nodiana and Cikgu Norma. It has been a few months that we have not seen Cikgu Azalilah who was transferred to Kucing. Her school SM Vokasional Kucing is also one of the 15 pioneer vocational colleges in Malaysia.

Our Form 5 students this year will be the last batch of students for Sekolah Menengah Vokasional Seri Manjung. The Form 4 students this year will become students of Kolej Vokasional Seri Manjung eventhough they are sitting for the SPM examination next year.

LAST TEACHER'S MEETING FOR 2011

Last Friday marked the last time that the teachers of Sekolah Menengah Vokasional Seri Manjung were attending a teacher's meeting chaired by the principal. During the next meeting which will be held on 27 December 2011, we will be attending the meeting chaired by the director as lecturers of Kolej Vokasional Seri Manjung.
During this last meeting, we bade farewell three of our teachers who had gotten transfers to other schools to be with their husbands. Leaving us will be Puan Siti Kamariah, Puan Asiah Ahmat and Puan Baniazura. Two of our attachment teachers, Cikgu Hanafiah and Cikgu Nurul Marliana will also be leaving us as their contract has ended.

FAREWELL LUNCH FOR CIKGU HANAFIAH

Today Puan Kamariah and I were busy holding farewell ceremonies for our colleagues who will no longer be with us next year when the school is transformed into a college. The second farewell that we had for today was for Cikgu Hanafiah and Puan Nurul Marliana at Shabu Shabu Restaurant. Unfortunately, Puan Nurul could not be with us as her son was ill.
The contracts of both Cikgu Hanafiah and Cikgu Nurul expire at the end of the year and will not be renewed as we already have an excess of teachers for 2011. We are all hoping and praying that both of them will be selected to undergo training to become full-fledged teachers.
On behalf of the teachers, staff and students of Vokasma, I would like to thank both teachers for the good job they have done during their two years at Vokasma. May they be absorbed into teacher training programmes and come back to lecture at Kolej Vokasional Seri Manjung in future. We really need dedicated and hardworking lecturers like them.

BIDDING FAREWELL TO PUAN SITI KAMARIAH

This afternoon, Puan Kamariah and I held a small ceremony to bid farewell to Puan Siti Kamariah or Puan CTK as she is fondly known. Tuan Haji Ahmad Hasnin, Puan Fatihah and Puan Hafizah are all away on duty as invigilators for the SPM examination. Cik Irma is on medical leave while both Cikgu Zainal and Cikgu Idzarif were preoccupied elsewhere. So that left the only two members of the English language department to present a gift from the teachers in the department to Puan CTK.
Puan CTK is sad to leave us as she has many fond memories of the school but she has to ask for the transfer to be with her husband who is attached to the Ministry of Defence in Kuala Lumpur. We wish her well and hope that she will be successful in her future undertakings.

RM100 SCHOOLING ASSISTANCE

This morning our Form 4 students who were accompanied by their parents or guardians received the RM100 schooling government aid for school going children. Those whose parents were not able to come today could do it later. Ustaz Zamri, an officer from the district education office (PPD Manjung) was present during the disbursement of the schooling aid to the students.

We have done our part in teaching the students and when they are in the examination hall, we can only hope and pray that they will be able to do their best.

GIVING GUIDANCE AND SUPPORT TO OUR STUDENTS

This morning the Form 5 students in our school sat for their SPM English language paper. As most of them are not from English speaking backgrounds, they were very nervous and some were demotivated. To give them guidance and support, Puan Kamariah, Puan Siti Kamariah and I went in the evening to motivate as well as give last minute tips and advice to our students.

Like previous years, a lucky draw was held for the teachers and staff. For this lucky draw, every one gets a prize but then the difference is that they may be big or small, cheap or expensive. This year, Cikgu Salleh and Puan Hashitah walked away with the grand prizes of a one night two days stay at Orient Star Resort in Lumut.

Today is the start of the SPM Examination. The first paper was Bahasa Melayu Kertas 1. The students gathered outside the examination halls to perform prayers first. The teachers also spoke to them to give them words of encouragement before they entered the examination hall.

The Resource Centre of Vokasma held its year end gathering at Teluk Batik Resort on Thursday, 10 November 2011. The emcee for the event was Asyraf. Cikgu Zulkifli bin Ismail, the senior assistant for co-curriculum was invited to give a speech to the librarians and library teachers who attended the Do. He later presented certificates of appreciation and gifts to the Form 5 librarians.

ASKING FOR FORGIVENESS AND BLESSINGS

After the assembly on Friday, the Form 5 students lined up to ask for forgiveness for any wrong doings and misbehaviour throughout their time in school. They also asked for blessings from their teachers to do well in their SPM examinations beginning on 14 November 2011.

BICYCLES AND MISS CHEAH

Know what? Miss Cheah does not know how to ride a bicycle. Really! When she was a child, she had a tricycle which she happily pedalled around. However, when her dad bought her a bicycle with only two wheels, she just couldn't seem to get the hang of balancing myself on it.

You can only see her posing next to bicycles and not riding on them. The bicycles that you see her with are actually for hotel guests of the Teluk Batik Resort. Miss Cheah is pictured with Nabil and Aizat at the entrance to the resort. They had attended a function to fete students who were successful in co-curricular activities for 2011.

The assembly for this morning was the last for the Form 5 students. After this, they'd be sitting for their SPM examinations beginning on the 14th of November, 2011. Yesterday morning, our school played host to a group of visitors from Sekolah Agama Menengah Tinggi Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz from Sabak Bernam. A total of 39 Form 3 students and 3 teachers came. Yesterday morning, Baron Syafiq's grandparents, Tuan Haji Bahtam @ Bahtom v Bistamam and Puan Hajah Halimaton bt Abdullah had a special reception (Jamuan Arwah Ibu Baron Syafiq) for the Form 4 librarians. They also invited a few of their grandson's teachers to the feast prepared by Puan Hajah Halimaton. She treated us to Nasi Minyak, Curry Chicken, Kerabu Mangga, Tauhu Masak Udang and Agar-agar.

A special prayer ceremony was held in the SMVSM surau to seek blessings from Allah for our Muslim students to do well in their SPM examination this year. The parents of the students were also invited to join this prayer ceremony. The students also carried out Sembahyang Hajat during the prayer session.

BLESSING CEREMONY FOR HINDU STUDENTS

While the Muslim students were in the Surau for the Program Mohon Restu, Miss Cheah, Miss Yogesh and Puan Lim brought the 2 Form 5 Indian students, Sharveen and Yoga, to the Mariamman Temple in Sitiawan for a Hindu Blessing Ceremony. Their juniors Ezekiel and Surendran went along. While Surendran joined in the blessing ceremony to do well in the examinations, Ezekiel just helped to take photographs as he is a Christian. I told him that next year, I'd accompany him to his Methodist Church for a special prayer ceremony when it is his time to sit for the SPM.

MOHON RESTU PROGRAM: REGISTRATION

The parents of the Form 5 students were invited to join in the Mohon Restu Program or Seeking Blessing Program which was held this morning. The parents who came had to register at counters specially set up for this program. They were later invited to have breakfast at the Dewan Aspuri before going to the surau for the prayer ceremony.

SEJARAH AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE SESSIONS FOR PROGRAM KEPONG

The students who have been chosen to undergo Program Kepong were tutored by Cik Siti Mariam for history for two hours today. After that it was Miss Cheah and Tuan Haji Hasnin who gave them a session on the literature component for the SPM 1119 English Language Paper.

After holding the Creative Creations from Recyclables Contest for more than a month, it was finally judgement day for the entries. I invited Ustaz Lotpi, Cikgu NorHafizah and Cikgu Bazuaniza to judge the creations sent in my the teachers, staff and students. The three judges took more than half an hour to come up with winners. I'll post pictures of the winning entries in a later post.

SABAH SNAKE GRASS (CLINACANTHUS)

The news vendor for our school, Mr Chong shared a herbal tip with Miss Cheah, Ustazah Roslina and Puan Asiah yesterday. He told us that his brother who is suffering from leukaemia is trying a type of herb called Sabah Snake Grass or Belalai Gajah. Mr Chong read about this wonder herb in the Chinese newspaper and managed to get hold of it for his brother. It seems that after taking the Sabah Snake Grass for a week, Mr Chong's brother is feeling better.
This morning when he came to the library to send the newspapers, Mr Chong brought along the Sabah Snake Grass for me to plant in the Herb Garden. However, he said that I need to place the plant in a container of water until roots come out before planting. Hopefully, I can grow a lot of the plants in school so that whoever needs them can get it from us.

MY SPRAINED HAND

A week ago, I had sprained my right hand while lifting a heavy object. I had used medicated plaster on my hand for a few days and it got better. However, I sprained the same hand again while lifting some heavy potted plants in my compound yesterday. You see, it was raining heavily and the water from the rain gutter was hitting hard on a few of my potted plants causing the soil to flow out. When the rain had stopped, I went out to move the pots and also to clean my compound.
When I woke up this morning, my hand felt painful and I felt that the bone in my thumb was dislocated. When driving to school, I actually used my left arm to maneuver the steering wheel with the right hand steadying it. I drove very slowly until I reached school.
Thank goodness when I reached school, the students were on hand to help me carry my laptop, camera and bag from the car to the library. Later the group of boys below helped me to set up up the LCD projector and screen for my lesson later in the morning.

However, my hand began hurting more as the morning wore on. So immediately after my lesson ended, I asked for permission from the principal to go for treatment. Luckily, Puan Kamariah was free at that time and she helped to send me to the Chinese traditional masseur, Uncle Cheong's place. He helped to set my dislocated bone and also acupressure to my sprained hand. As expected it was painful but I soldiered on. A poultice of herbs were later placed on my swollen hand. After that on came the bandage. I am to have it on until tomorrow. Uncle Cheong told me not to eat chicken (not a problem) and not to drink any iced drinks (big problem) to help my hand heal faster.

In the pictures you see me with Puan Rasilah. She had dislocated her middle finger when playing netball. She too went to Uncle Cheong for treatment. Her bandage has been on for four days. She would be having it removed today.

After attending the Kem Al-Falah Fasa II at Virgo Batik Resort in Teluk Batik, the 25 participants checked out from the place and got ready to go home. Waiting for them on the bus was Encik Hambali, the school driver. He would be sending them back to the hostel where some of their parents would be picking them up to take them home for the week long Deepavali holidays. There were a few who would be going back on their own by bus.

After three days and two nights of hard work looking after the 25 participants, Cikgu Hanafiah got ready to go home. With him is Alif who assisted Cikgu Hanafiah during the Al-Falah Camp.

On Monday, there was a group of teachers who went back to school to help with the planning for the new Kolej Vokasional. Our suggestions have been put into power point presentation and will be presented by the principal when she attends a meeting on the 1st of July in Penang.

Last Saturday was a replacement school day for the teachers and students of Vokasma. This is in order for everyone to enjoy a week long holiday. However, there was a group of teachers who sacrificed their stretch of holiday by going to school to attend a meeting to plan and prepare for the transformation to a vocational college. As government servants, our sense of duty comes first.
During break-time, we were treated to breakfast by Ustaz Lotpi at the Pangkalan food stall.

Today is the last day of the Phase II of the Al-Falah Camp.The last learning session for the students was titled, "English: Learning to Score A+" and the guest speaker was Mr Arjan Singh. Miss Cheah was the emcee for this particular session.

On the third and final day of the Al-Falah Camp, the students attended an Answering Techniques Session titled, "English: I want to Score A+" with Mr Arjan Singh of S.M. Teknik Brash, Ipoh. The session was from 8.00 a.m. until 12.30 p.m. with a tea break in between from 10.00 to 10.30 in the morning.

Yesterday afternoon, a group of 25 elite students from Vokasma checked in at the Virgo Batik Resort. They were transported by school bus to the resort in Teluk Batik for a Motivation Camp to prepare for the upcoming SPM examination. Puan Kamariah, Encik Hanafiah and Miss Cheah are part of the teachers looking after the students for the 3-day programme.
